Billie Eilish has ignited speculation suggesting she may have been indirectly criticizing Taylor Swift as she condemned her music industry peers for their environmentally unfriendly practice of releasing numerous vinyl versions of albums to boost sales.
During a discussion with Billboard about her commitment to sustainability, Eilish expressed her frustration, stating, “some of the biggest artists in the world making f****** 40 different vinyl packages that have a different unique thing just to get you to keep buying more.” Although Eilish didn’t mention Swift or any specific artist, fans interpreted her remarks as aimed at the Love Story singer due to Swift’s history of releasing multiple vinyl editions of her albums.
Some fans took to social media platforms to express their reactions, with one user tweeting, “‘Swifties and kpop stans found on the floor.’” Another user posted, “She clocked Taylor so bad I’m crying,” while yet another wrote, “‘Oh the Swifties are going to HATE this.’”
However, some fans pointed out that Swift isn’t the only artist to adopt this practice, with one user noting, “Everyone clocking Taylor for this when we’ve seen artists like Ariana, Olivia, etc. doing the exact same thing now. So let’s not point any fingers…”
Eilish herself isn’t immune to this practice, as her latest studio album, Happier Than Ever, was available in eight different vinyl variations. However, Billboard clarified that these variants were made from recycled materials.
In her interview, Eilish expressed frustration and irritation at witnessing “all your favorite artists” prioritizing sales figures and financial gains over sustainability efforts. While she didn’t nɑme specific artists, many well-known musicians, including Swift, Travis Scott, Olivia Rodrigo, and Blink-182, have released multiple vinyl versions of their recent albums.
Regarding her own sustainability efforts, Eilish’s mother, Maggie Baird, emphasized the importance of artists setting a positive example and influencing others to do better.
Towards the end of the interview, Eilish reflected on the widespread apathy towards the climate crisis, highlighting the importance of individual actions in making a positive impact.
Eilish also hinted at her upcoming album, which follows her previous works, including Happier Than Ever and When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
She released a two-track EP titled Guitar Songs in 2022 and contributed an acclaimed single titled What Was I Made For? to the Barbie soundtrack, which later won the Best Original Song Oscar.
