In the realm of Hollywood, Jason Momoa typically embodies larger-than-life characters like Aquaman and Khal Drogo. However, his latest venture, “Sweet Girl,” offers a departure from the fantastical as he portrays an ordinary Pittsburgh father named Ray Cooper. The film follows Ray’s quest for vengeance against a pharmaceutical company he holds responsible for his wife’s death. Momoa, a father himself, found the role to be a natural fit, particularly as it allowed him to handpick Isabela Merced, known for her role in “Instant Family,” to play his on-screen daughter.
Momoa and Merced recently sat down with the Associated Press to discuss their experiences working on the film and the bond they formed both on and off the screen.
Their remarks have been condensed for clarity.
Q: Jason, how did you decide on Isabela to portray your daughter?
Momoa: I had a vision for the cast, and Isabela was at the forefront of my mind. We had mutual connections, and I felt she would be perfect for the role. I reached out to her, and thankfully, she agreed to join the project. I couldn’t have imagined anyone else in the role.
Q: What was your first meeting like?
Momoa: I was eager to meet Isabela, although I admit I was a bit nervous. She seemed reserved at first, but we quickly hit it off. We shared a lot of laughs and bonded over our similar styles. I affectionately started calling her “Oompa,” and it stuck. She warmed up to me, and we developed a great rapport.
Merced: I hadn’t watched “Game of Thrones” before meeting Jason, but I knew of his work and admired him. Despite his intimidating presence on screen, he’s incredibly warm and genuine in person.
Q: Is it easier to build a connection when shooting on location?
Merced: Shooting on location definitely fosters a sense of camaraderie among the cast and crew. We spent a lot of time together outside of filming, exploring the city and enjoying meals together. It allowed us to form genuine connections and trust, which translated on screen.
Q: Isabela, I heard you performed your own stunts in the film.
Merced: Yes, I did most of my stunts, thanks to our amazing stunt team. The trust we developed was crucial in executing those scenes seamlessly.
Momoa: Seeing Isabela handle herself in those action sequences was awe-inspiring. She brought an incredible level of skill and determination to the role.
Q: Jason, why did you choose to produce and star in “Sweet Girl”?
Momoa: I was drawn to the opportunity to portray an everyday man facing extraordinary circumstances. The film tackles important themes and features a compelling storyline. Additionally, the chance to collaborate with talented individuals and bring this project to life was incredibly rewarding.
Q: Do you think this film is suitable for fathers and daughters to watch together?
Momoa: Absolutely. As a father myself, I found the father-daughter dynamic in the film to be deeply relatable. It’s a gripping story that resonates with themes of family, love, and justice, making it ideal for families to enjoy together.
Watching the film with my own children was a memorable experience, and I believe other fathers and daughters will appreciate the powerful message it conveys.
