Selena Gomez has participated in several events throughout the awards season, with her most recent appearance being at the 2024 SAG Awards in late February. Those anticipating her presence on the red carpet for tonight’s Academy Awards, especially given that the “Only Murders in the Building” actress has never attended the Oscars before, will be left disappointed.
Gomez’s decision to skip this evening’s ceremony is understandable. The Oscars primarily focus on film, lacking categories for television, the domain to which Gomez’s project belongs. Currently, without any nominations for her acting projects, there reмɑιns potential for this to change in the future, particularly as she gears up to film a biopic on Linda Ronstadt. Despite her absence, Gomez wasn’t chosen as a presenter for the night, a role that has been granted to her fellow pop star and actress, Ariana Grande.
Gomez gave Grande a shout-out on Instagram Friday, following the release of Grande’s new album, Eternal Sunshine. “The queen never misses,” she wrote.
Nevertheless, there’s a possibility of Gomez showing up at the Vanity Fair Oscar after-party on the night of the Oscars. The last time she graced this esteemed gathering was in 2016. Demonstrating a strong commitment to advancing her acting career, Gomez shared in a Rolling Stone interview after the release of her single “Love On” that, although she doesn’t plan to fully step back from music, it isn’t the primary sphere where she wishes to channel all her energy.
“I think it’s natural for people to take breaks, but I think for me, there is a whole other aspect to my life, pride and joy,” Gomez said. “I love film. I love TV. I just feel like I haven’t done a lot of the things that I want to do in that space. It’s not that it’s ‘no, never’ [to music], it’s more that I would like to explore that world a bit more and have the time to actually do that.”
In the acting world, Gomez added, “I love being able to take roles that I have to fιɡҺt for, not the ones that are being handed to me. I’m going for the stuff that really, really inspires me.”
Gomez began her acting journey as a child, making early appearances on Barney and later securing her breakthrough role in Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place. The series is currently undergoing a reboot, and Gomez is set to revisit her role in the pilot.
